Web Advertising Ethics

Advertising has been for centuries one of the main ways in which people would be persuaded to buy things or to follow certain ideas. Advertising has evolved much throughout the time and if in the past advertising consisted of images and text messages, nowadays the field has extended much more. Online advertising in particular is recognized as one of the most valuable ways to transmit a message with a serious potential to increase the revenue of advertising agencies each year. There are certainly many things that are beneficial about web advertising but there are also many things that one can complain about and that is why one should learn more about the ethics of online advertising.

Web advertising includes various types of advertising, some of which are regarded as ethical and some of which are not. Internet surfers know that some websites use a large number of ads, and they might include flashing banners that distract the user, misleading images or messages indicating error messages that are somewhat similar to the errors of the operating system. These websites may take advantages of the financial benefits of web advertising in the sense that they will receive the revenue produced by the ads the website features, but one would not bother to check the content of these ads. Many of them are likely to contain links to malicious websites, malicious software or adult material.

In principle, aggressive web advertising is considered unethical. The ethics of online advertising dictate that the adverts should not cause nuisance to the users, they should not distract their attention and they should certainly be able to choose whether they want to view the advert or not. The problem is however that there is nothing that can stop this type of aggressive advertising which is in the end harmful for the website on which it is placed and for the users themselves.
