Malware In Web Advertising
Advertising has always been a strong industry in terms that companies have always needed a way in which they could persuade individuals to buy their services or products. Advertising has also taken many forms ever since it was developed and until today. Arguably, online advertising is one of the strongest areas of advertising because the internet allows advertisers’ access to so many more potential customers. At the same time, internet advertising is a much cheaper option than traditional advertising, and potentially even eco friendlier. Yet, web advertising comes with several disadvantages and unfortunately most of these are directed towards the user. Here one can read more about one of the particular threats that online advertising poses to the end use: adware.Adware is a type of malware, malicious software, and it consists of a package that plays, displays, or downloads advertisements to one’s computer without the user being prompt for. In most cases adware come in the form of pop-up windows or they may be on a screen which is presented to the user during the installation process. An adware is however made with a purpose and that is to generate revenue for its author. Usually, adwares are harmless for the security or well functioning of the computer and the operating system. However, they might used in combination with other types of software such as spyware, keyloggers and other types of privacy-intrusive software.
The adware always comes with functions that are designed to note what internet websites the user visits. Once these have been identified, the advertisements that are presented to that specific user will most likely feature types of goods that would be of interest to him. From the company’s point of view adware is generally a good way to generate revenue and to make its products more popular. But from the user’s point of view, adware is generally seen as a nuisance and as a distraction from the tasks that were meant to be performed.
